For sale, the Pile Mill (but everyone knows it as White Mill).

Mulino Bianco, one of the most iconic buildings in the world, or at least in Italy, is for sale.
Few people know that it is located in Tuscany, in Chiusdino a town in the province of Siena. It is called The Pile Mill and is a fully functioning mill.

We live in a world of images. And some images have now become part of our lived experience, our personal memory as well as our collective memory. This is the case, for example, with images of some buildings that have become iconic. Complicated by the media (both old and new media), buildings such as the Empire State Building in New York or Alnwick Castle (better known as Hogwarts, i.e., the home of Harry Potter’s school of witchcraft and wizardry) seem familiar to us.

Here is a very brief roundup of some buildings that have become icons. Thanks to movies, commercials or even cartoons.

And right from the cartoons we begin.

If I say Boris Lume Patisserie Boulangerie does anyone think of anything? Nothing?
It is a patisserie bakery located in the Montmartre district of Paris.

This is the photograph of the exterior.

While this is his television version. Cartoonish…

That’s right!

Those who have children will now have recognized it immediately. It is the bakery of Marinette’s parents (the high school student who turns into LadyBug, the little girl masquerading in a polka-dot costume). If you don’t know who LadyBug is just click here to find out

From cartoons to movies, the step is a very short one.

This is the world-famous Empire State Building in New York City.

Why do we remember?

Simple because it has been the location for so many blockbuster movies: from King Kong to Independence Day, from Sleepless in Seattle (with the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks couple) to Superman II, to more recent TV series such as Gossip Girl and How I Met Your Mother.

And still speaking of movies and skyscrapers, how can we forget the great Sean Connery (in the company of a wonderful Catherine Zeta Jones) escaping from the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur? The film in question is called Entrapment and below is a picture of the towers. With well in view is the catwalk on the 41st floor that connects them and where some memorable scenes starring the two stars mentioned earlier were filmed.

But, speaking of skyscrapers, we cannot forget the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. How we cannot forget Ethan Hunt (aka Tom Cruise as the agent in Mission Impossible) climbing its steel profile with his bare hands (but with ultratechnological gloves).

Sticking with the theme of iconic buildings in exotic locations, we could not fail to mention Singapore’s Marina Bay complex in this ranking. You know the three buildings joined by a pool?

Here the view from the pool

If it does not tell you anything, it is because we are all used to seeing the complex from below, not from above. Here it is in all its glory. Recognizable Now? Is it or is it not one of the most iconic buildings in the world?

But the world of TV and film are not the only ones who contribute to making a place, a building, an icon. Publicity also takes its toll. And it takes a lot.

Perhaps a little early to call it an iconic place. But I am sure you will recognize it. Especially if you are an ice cream lover.

This is the Cornetto Algida beach. The commercial is from 2021, so you may have a hard time remembering it. However, I-as soon as I saw the photo-immediately connected the beach to the advertisement. Yes but which beach? Well … it’s not as far away as Singapore. In fact, it is right here in our home. It is called Giovinazzo Beach and is in Apulia more or less halfway between Bari and Molfetta.

Among the world’s most iconic buildings the icon of advertising icons: the White Mill

Who hasn’t had White Mill cookies at least once? Macine, Galletti or Tegolini whatever you want all these sweets are accumulated from a commercial shot at the Mulino delle Pile, in Chiusdino in the province of Siena in Tuscany.

The Mill was built around 1200 by Monks who used it for milling grain. Today this beautiful structure is for sale. And guess who was entrusted with the operation? Yes to us at House&Loft!

Below is an image from the original film from the early 1990s, the one – to be clear – that gave rise to the myth.

Here is a picture of what it looked like in the commercial fiction.

Here as it really is.
